Orion’s Belt Submissions are currently open for speculative poetry, prose and art.

Orion’s Belt is a literary speculative-fiction online magazine. They specialize in the strange and poignant and awe-inspiring, stories that have a cosmic scale and intimate personal stakes. Currently, they publish fiction and poetry, one story and one poem per month. All submissions must be 1200 words or less.

Speculative fiction, for them encompasses a wide range of fiction that includes non-realist elements. While they focus on science-fiction and fantasy, they are open to slipstream, horror, magic realism, myth retellings, surrealism, superhero stories, and all other fantastical genres and subgenres. They expect writers to write interesting stories to be interesting enough to hook in readers.

Guidelines for Orion’s Belt’s Submission

  • Submissions should be directed to orionsbelt.submissions@gmail.com.
  • All stories must be under 1200 words (not including the title and byline). Stories over 1200 words will sadly be rejected automatically.
  • All stories must contain significant speculative elements. This does not mean all sci-fi stories must have lasers and rockets. It just means a non-speculative story doesn’t become speculative if you include a single line clarifying the story takes place on Mars.
  • The subject line of your email should be a variation of “Submission – Story Name (Author Name).”
  • There is no need for submissions to be anonymous.
  • Stories need not necessarily follow Standard Manuscript Format, but it is preferred.
  • The font should be 12-point Times New Roman.
  • There is no hard limit to the number of times one can submit, but they ask that you not submit more than twice in one month.
  • If Orion’s Belt rejects a story, please do not resubmit it, even if you revise it.
  • Submitting a story simultaneously to Orion’s Belt and another publication is acceptable, but please contact them if another accepts the story first.
  • They only accept stories that have not already been published elsewhere.
  • A cover letter is expected. This needn’t be long or detailed. Learn how to write a proper cover letter to submit.
  • Attach the story to your email as a Word file or PDF. In the body of the letter, include your name, the title of your story, its length, its genre or subgenre, up to three previous publications, and any other information you deem relevant.

Imagine 2200 Climate Fiction Writing Contest is calling for short stories that envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress.

Imagine 2200 celebrates stories that envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope. Stories must be set between today and the year 2200, in a future that shows the path to a clean, green, just world. They are looking for stories that showcase creative climate solutions and community-centered adaptations. They especially want to read — and share — narratives that center solutions from the communities most impacted by the climate crisis and stories that envision what a truly equitable, decolonized society could look like.

In the Imagine 2200 Climate Fiction Writing Contest, stories should be set anywhere between the present day and the year 2200, and should show the path to a clean, green, and just future. Therefore, this is a theme writing contest and you must ensure you can match the theme of the contest in your submission.

Eligibility Guidelines for Imagine 2200 Climate Fiction Writing Contest

  • Entry is free.
  • The contest is open to writers anywhere in the world, except where participation is prohibited or restricted by applicable law.
  • Authors must be 18 years or older at the time of submission.

Submission Guidelines for Imagine 2200 Climate Fiction Writing Contest

  • Submissions must be fictional stories between 3,000 and 5,000 words.
  • Your story needs to be creative and interesting.
  • Ensure your submissions must be written in English. They are not able to translate stories from other languages at this time.

Imagine 2200 Climate Fiction Writing Contest

  • It must not have been previously published, nor received a prize or distinction in another contest.
  • They do not accept simultaneous submissions (stories can only be submitted to this contest and not to others, until we have informed you of the result).
  • Only one submission will be accepted per entrant.
  • More than one entrant can co-author submissions. Only one of the co-authors should submit the story. The submissions form will offer a way to list the other co-author(s). If a co-authored story is selected for publication, all authors will be credited, and prize money will be divided between them.
  • Submissions will only be accepted through Submittable — click the “submit” button at the bottom of their website page when you’re ready! If you need accessibility accommodations, email the team at imaginefiction@grist.org.
  • Stories will be judged by a board of literary experts, including acclaimed authors and editors Nalo Hopkinson, Sam J. Miller, and Paolo Bacigalupi.
  • All 12 final stories will be published on Grist’s website and partner sites as part of our Imagine 2200 collection.
  • Worldwide copyright and ownership of each story remains with the author.

Prizes

  • The first-prize story will be awarded $3,000.
  • Second prize $2,000.
  • Third prize $1,000.
  • Nine additional finalists will each receive a $300 honorarium.
  • Worldwide copyright and ownership of each story remains with the author.
  •  All winners and finalists will have their story published in an immersive collection on Grist’s website.

Huck Magazine is Accepting Pitches

Huck Magazine seeks independent culture, people and movements that paddle against the current.
Their commissioning editor is looking for political, activism, and culture pitches. At Huck Magazine, they seek pitches or tips on politics and activism –

“They accept pitches on culture, press releases, tips, plus invites for music, film, and sports, especially if there’s an interesting scene or story.”

Submission Guidelines for Huck Magazine Pitches

Huck Magazine publishes news, profiles, interviews, reportage, opinion pieces, and photo essays across digital and print. They also commission original documentaries and films.

Huck Magazine is accepting pitches

How To Pitch a Story for Huck Magazine

  • Get acquainted with Huck: get a feel for what they do before pitching. Spend some time on the website; go through an issue of the magazine.
  • Keep it short: be concise, your pitch should be around 2-4 paragraphs.
  • Think about the format: The best way to avoid your email getting lost is to format your subject line this way: PITCH: [insert concise suggested headline]. Please do not send completed stories.
  • Pitch stories, not ideas: an idea is abstract, and a story is a concrete. Read this useful explainer here.

Huck magazine seeks pitches in these categories

Features: Huck Magazine wants reflective pieces, with original reporting, that comment on current social and political landscapes.

Profiles: Seek out exciting characters shaping independent culture today: artists, filmmakers, photographers, skaters, surfers, and activists.

Opinion: they are looking for strong perspectives pegged to current news, delivered concisely. Carve out a unique and intelligent take, and think about what makes you the correct voice to take it on.

Photo essays: Visual storytelling that shines a light on social injustice and champions creative counterculture.

Send your pitches to ben.smoke@tcolondon.com.

Pay

The pay ranges from £130 – £200, depending on what you have to offer them.
