The Republic Magazine Residency Program is a collaborative effort of The French Embassy in Nigeria, in partnership with StoryMi and The Republic Magazine. It invites emerging writers, photographers, and illustrators to participate in celebrating Nigeria’s cultural and historical heritages through  creative expressions.

 

The aim of The Republic magazine Residency Program is to produce a compelling and visually striking special issue of The Republic Magazine. Highlighting alternative perspectives on Nigerian heritage. These “alternative heritages” may include elements facing the risk of disappearance or those representing recent creations by minority, marginalized, or protesting groups. This involves monuments, languages, religions, traditions, music, and histories that collectively define Nigeria’s cultural richness.

Program Details for The Republic Magazine Residency Program

Spanning three months from August to October, the program includes a week-long workshop residency in Ibadan (24th to 30th of August) followed by a two-month online mentorship program (September-October). More so, participants will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with renowned professionals, including Andrew Esiebo, a distinguished visual storyteller recognized globally for his multimedia approach and extensive publications in prestigious outlets such as The National Geographic and The New York Times.

 

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be between 20-35 years old
  • Furthermore, they must be Nigerian by nationality and reside in Nigeria, with attention given to gender and regional diversity
  • In addition, they must showcase a robust portfolio showcasing their creative abilities in writing, photography, or illustration.

 

How to Apply

  • Interested individuals should email the following documents to contact@storymi.org by July 20, 2024:
  • A concise biography and artist statement
  • A portfolio featuring their best works (including writing samples, photographs, or illustrations)
  • Responses to the provided application questionnaire
  • As well as a letter of motivation outlining their interest in the residency and how it aligns with their artistic and professional goals.

Eligibility for The spoken Word Contest

First and foremost, any applicant must be a Nigerian living in Nigeria to be eligible. This competition is open to both teens and adults. Since it is an online contest, your location within Nigeria does not matter.

How to Register

To participate, follow these steps:

1. Video Creation: Make a video of yourself reciting an original poem. It doesn’t have to be a new poem; it can be one you’ve written or recited before. The key is that it must be your own original work.
2. Theme: Your poem can be about any theme. Make sure you know what inspired your poem, as you’ll need to provide this information during registration.
4. Video Length: While your video can be of any length, the preferred maximum is 3 minutes.
5. Upload and Register: After creating your video, return to the contest page and click on the “Upload your Video to Register” button. Upload your video to register for the contest.
6. Confirmation: Once registered, you will immediately receive a confirmation voting link.
7. Registration Deadline: Registration ends on June 9th, 2024, but it may close earlier if 50 contestants register before then. As of now, 23 contestants have registered, so act quickly to secure your spot.
8. Voting: Voting starts on June 10th, 2024. Each vote costs N50, and anyone can vote for you multiple times.

Submission Guidelines For The Fixi Novo Malaysian Novel Contest

  • Submissions should be novels primarily in English, spanning 50,000 to 70,000 words.
  • While all genres are accepted, entries in the Crime genre are excluded due to previous winners hailing from this category.
  • Preference is given to stories set in Malaysia, offering readers a glimpse into the diverse cultural milieu of the nation.
  • Interested writers are required to submit a review of any of the 15 Fixi Novo books still in print. The review should be comprised of a minimum of 200 words.
  • This review should highlight aspects liked or disliked about the chosen book.

  • All entries must be written in English.

  • Limited to one entry per person.

  • Submissions must be standalone and cannot be extracts from a larger piece.

  • Submissions must be not more than 2,500 words.

  • Importantly, stories must not have been:

Published, Self-published or Accepted for publication in print or online, or have won or been placed in another competition at any time.

  • As regards travel expenses, it can be used for economy travel costs only and are not exchangeable for cash.

  • In addition, travel expenses can be used for transport only, and can not be used towards accommodation outside of the dates of our symposium.

  • Submissions will be judged anonymously, so please ensure that your name does not appear anywhere on your work.

  • Due to the volume of applications the judges decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into following the results.

Are you a poetry writer who wants an all-expense covered opportunity and a cash award? Then this opportunity will interest you.

The organizers of the 2024 Alpine Fellowship Annual Symposium are currently accepting submissions. Three lucky writers will be awarded this international prize.

The theme for this year’s submissions is : ‘Language

Eligibility Guidelines for Alpine Fellowship Poetry Prize

  • Open to all nationalities.

  • In addition, everyone who enters must be aged 18 or above at the time of entry.

  • All entries must be written in English.

  • Furthermore, entrants can only enter one of the prizes.

 

Submission Guidelines for Alpine Fellowship Poetry Prize

  • Limited to one entry per person.

  • You may submit one poem or a collection of poems as long as ALL the poems in the collection speak to the theme.

  • Importantly, entrants must note that there is a maximum of 500 words per entry.

  • Travel expenses can be used for travel costs only and are not exchangeable for cash.

  • More so, travel expenses can be used for transport only, and can not be used towards accommodation outside of the dates of our symposium.

  • Submissions will be judged anonymously, so please ensure that your name does not appear anywhere on your work.

  • Also, due to the volume of applications the judges decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into following the results.

  • All entries must be sent via the Alpine Fellowship Submittable.

 

Prizes

The winner of the Poetry Prize will receive a cash prize. Also, the runners up will receive travel expense support that must be used to attend the 2023 symposium which will be held from 10th-13th August 2024 in Fjällnäs, Sweden

First place: £3,000 cash grant

Second place: £1,000 travel expense

Third place: £1,000 travel expense

ServiceScape Short Story Award is calling all short story writers for their 2023 contest.

Are you a short story writer interested in gaining more exposure and a bigger audience for your creative work? Would an extra $1,000.00 USD in your pocket be a great for your creative growth? If so, ServiceScape Short Story Award 2023 is the perfect way to achieve both.

Eligibility for the 2023 ServiceScape Short Story Award

  • Applicants must be 18 years and above
  • The contest is open to all. It is an international contest. Therefore, anyone can apply.
  • More so, there is no purchase necessary to enter. Entry is free.

 

Submission Guidelines For the ServiceScape Short Story Award

  • For this award, any genre or theme of short story is accepted.
  • Also, all applicants should submit their original unpublished work of short fiction or nonfiction, 5,000 words or fewer, to be considered.

Terms and Conditions

  • All submitted entries must be original, unpublished works of short fiction or nonfiction, up to 5,000 words in length.
  • Also, the winner retains full rights to his or her submitted piece.
  • They require only that the winning short story be published online first in a permanent blog post on the site.
  • Furthermore, the winner retains all other copyright, publishing, and reprint rights and ownership of the story.
  • More so, he or she retains the right to publish his or her work elsewhere and at any time without restriction after the competition is over, as long as the winning short story can remain published on the ServiceScape blog as well.
  • ServiceScape is not responsible for any situation that constitutes an application form submission failure, including technical malfunctions experienced by the form submitter or by ServiceScape. ServiceScape employees and/or their immediate family and household members are not eligible to be contest participants.
  • Furthermore, void where prohibited by law.
    Each contest participant can enter only once.
  • Contest should apply via the application form submissions which must be written in English.
  • Furthermore, the contest starts on December 1, 2022 WAT and ends on November 30, 2023 WAT.

 

 

Judging Criteria 

  • Contest participants will be judged on their quality of writing. All decisions are final. Non-winning entries will be discarded after the winner has been chosen and the contest participants will retain all the rights to their submitted work.
  • More so, the potential winner will be notified via email in December 2023. The potential winner must send a headshot photograph within 10 days of the prize notification.
  • In addition, the potential winner must also sign and return an affidavit of eligibility, a liability release, and a publicity release (where legal) within 10 days of the prize notification.
  • If the potential winner does not deliver these required items within the specified time period or if the potential winner cannot be contacted for any reason, the prize will be forfeited and an alternate potential winner will be selected. If all required items are delivered within 10 days of the prize notification, the potential winner will be considered the winner of the contest.
  • The winner of the contest will be awarded $1,000.00 USD, payable by check and mailed within 4 weeks.
  • The prize is non-transferable. All federal, state, and local taxes imposed on the acceptance of a prize are solely the responsibility of the winner.
  • The winner’s name, headshot photograph, and writing will be featured within the ServiceScape blog soon thereafter.
  • More so, ServiceScape Incorporated reserves the right to modify or terminate this contest at any time without prior notice.

 

Prize
  • The sum of $1000 would be given to the winner.
  • In addition, along with receiving an award for $1,000.00 USD, the winner will also have his or her short story featured within their blog, which reaches thousands of readers per month.
