The Preservation Foundation is hosting an essay contest open to all writers around the world who are previously unpublished.

The Preservation Foundation Essay Contest organizers previously had strict rules about what it meant to be an “unpublished writer” but this year’s rules seem more relaxed. You should include a biography with your submission that makes it clear you are not previously published.

Rules for The Preservation Foundation Essay Contests 2021

For purposes of these contests, unpublished writers are defined as those whose job pay is not now or was not earlier based on their writing abilities or their freelance writing never produced revenues of over $500.00 in any single year.

  • The Preservation Foundation has sole authority to rule on any writer’s eligibility, the appropriateness of stories for entry, contest rules, and all other matters relating to the contest.
  • Regular Story Submissions–No Limit. Just to be clear–while there is a limit of two entries in each of the contests, there is no limit for stories not meant for the contests, whether nonfiction or fiction. So send in as many as you wish. Our purpose is to publish your works and you don’t have to enter any contests for us to do that.

The Preservation Foundation Essay Contest

Rules For the 2021 Contests

  • This year there will be five contest closing dates and prizes for five categories of nonfiction: Winners Circle nonfiction, Animal Nonfiction, General Nonfiction, Biographical Nonfiction, and Travel Nonfiction. See details below if you need clarification about any of these categories.
  • Stories must be between 1000–10,000 words in length.
  • There are no international limitations. Stories from any country are fine, although they must be written in English.
  • Language in the stories should be free of words or scenes not suitable for children, since many children read the stories and some actually post their stories.
  • Be sure your stories are ready for publication. We do not provide copy editing services. If they aren’t ready to go up on the site don’t send them until they are.
  • You can include a short author’s introduction for the beginning if you wish and a brief biography of the author at the end. This helps the organisers determine if you are truly an “unpublished writer.” Send these along in the body of your E-mail or as attachments.
  • Just to be clear, the publishers claim no rights to your stories. They are published with your name as copyright holder.
  • However, since their objective is to preserve these stories for future generations, not to put them up one year and take them down the next, contest runners-up and winners are expected to remain on the site for as long as the Preservation Foundation exists.
  • The foundation will, however, have no objection to the stories being published elsewhere. If you anticipate submitting your posted story to a publisher that would object to previous publication on our site you could use a pen name with us and/or a different title.
  • We will take a story down if absolutely necessary but will no longer accept stories from you after that.
  • Contact them if you need further clarification.
  • Stories should be submitted as electronic text files. No paper manuscripts can be considered.
  • If you submit copyright material as text or as illustration it is your responsibility to obtain permission to use it.
  • No story may be entered in more than one contest. The author should state which contest he/she is entering when making the submission.
  • Stories entered in any of our previous contests will not be eligible for current year contests.
  • A writer may enter one or two stories in each contest. There are no entry fees.
  • First prize in each category will be $200. Runners-up will receive $100. Winners, runners-up, and finalists in each category will receive certificates of recognition suitable for framing.

First prize winners in previous contests automatically move up to the Winners Circle. They are no longer eligible for prizes in the regular contests. However, there is a separate Winners Circle contest for them. We hope this will encourage newer writers and increase their chances of winning the regular contests.

The Preservation Foundation Essay Contest

               Contest for entries between
February 29, 2020, and April 30, 2021.

                  Nonfiction Animal Stories

Stories should be factual and true accounts of an encounter or encounters by the author with a wild animal or animals. These include, but are not limited to, birds, fish, butterflies, snails, lions, bears, turtles, wombats, etc., as long as it is not a pet.

           Contests for entries between
April 30, 2020 and June 30, 2021

                   General Nonfiction Contest

Any appropriate nonfiction topic is eligible. Stories must be true, not semi-fictional accounts. So-called “creative nonfiction” will not be considered.

            Contests for entries between
June 30, 2020 and August 31, 2021

               Biographical Nonfiction Contest

A biographical entry must be a true story of an individual(s) known to the author personally–not a fictional or historical character. Or, it could be autobiographical, a true story about the author’s life, the whole or an episode.

             Contests for entries between
August 31, 2020 and October 31, 2021

                    Travel Nonfiction Contest

Stories should be factual and true accounts of a trip taken by the author or a person or persons known by the author.

                               Judging

Judging will be as they have done it for the last several years. Click here to find out how.

                                Fiction

The Preservation Foundation will continue to accept new fictional stories of all types for posting on the site. However, they haven’t had a fiction contest since the year 2000. This decision is based on the belief that many internet sites now offer programs for writers of fiction, while very few encourage nonfiction. The foundation believes too that writers of fiction are also capable of writing about real events in their own lives and the lives of those they know.

The foundation will love to read and post your noncontest stories, both fiction and nonfiction. So send them in. After all, their primary purpose is to preserve those stories for your children and grandchildren and maybe even for your grandchildren’s children.

University of Michigan’s African Literature Today calls for papers, articles and interviews, that engage with African speculative fiction and science fiction for a special issue. The guest-editors for this issue are Chimalum Nwankwo and Louisa Uchum Egbunike. The deadline for submissions is November 16, 2020.

The press release from African Literature Today:

“In ancient Greece, The hierophants of Apollo drank from the sacred spring of Colophon for the efficacy of their rituals. The water, supposedly came from the tears of the goddess who wept for Thebes. Vitruvius was a mystic, so was Pythagoras. There were no Universities where theories were spawned or spun for the clarities of science or the ontologies or epistemologies which drove what historians regard as the glory of Rome or Greece. It was a world of speculation and rational or empirical projection. The medieval darkness of the West relied extensively on lights from what one may call advanced speculations and inchoate rational projections, on proto-sciences like alchemy and Metempsychosis. Eighteenth century enlightenment epistemology powered the familiar advances which are generally taken for granted today. It is necessary to keep all that trajectory in sight or in mind while laboring to understand the African mind and its deeper foundational drivers. A lot of those drivers are quite visible in the complex architectures of a lot of modern African literatures.

How can one read and fully appreciate Chinua Achebe without the Igbo pragmatism which defines the imaginative kinship with novels in Igbo language such as Pita Nwana’s Omenuko (1933) and Leopold Bell-Gam’s Ije Odumodu Jere (1963)? And how can one fully appreciate Wole Soyinka’s complex and intriguing Yoruba Ogun-ism without affirming its kinship with D. O. Fagunwa’s classic novel (1938) in Yoruba language – Ogboju Ode ninu Igbo Irunmale (The Forest of a Thousand Daemons: A Hunter’s Saga)? The deep past of African world and its complex and mysterious foundations still register in burgeoning modern African Literary productions.

It would be hard to believe that literary criticism has exhausted those strands in the makings of the magical design of Okiri’s The Famished Road, Syl-Cheney Coker’s The Last Harmattan of Alusine Dunar or indeed, Achebe’s Arrow of God, Soyinka’s Madmen and Specialists and Gabriel Okara’s esoteric The Voice

But while we look back through the gamut of history, the present generation should also engage our critical lens and attention because their works too, bubble with intense mental adventurism. Writers including Nnedi Okorafor, Namwali Serpell, Tendai Huchu, Akwaeke Emezi, and Tomi Adeyemi are but a few examples. Recent discussions around the “rise of science-fiction and fantasy” in Africa have led to a push-back in which writers and scholars have suggested that science fiction/ fantasy is not a new phenomenon in African literature. The need to recalibrate ways of reading and categorizing literature has underpinned suggestions that African classics such as Amos Tutuola’s The Palmwine Drinkard (1952), Buchi Emecheta’s The Rape of Shavi (1983) and Kojo Laing’s Woman of the Aeroplanes (1988) are read as part of the continent’s tradition in writing speculative/science fiction.

In recent years, debates have ensued about the appropriateness of the term ‘Afrofuturism’ in relation to African writing, given that it is a term which invokes a particular cultural aesthetic and tradition rooted in African speculative arts. One of the impulses for this special issue of ALT  is to explore the ways in which we approach the study of speculative works, thinking through our use of language, terminology and the genealogy of these works.”

Who is Eligible to Submit to African Literature Today:

  • Africans, both those on the continent and those in the diaspora.
  • There is no submission fee.

How to Submit to African Literature Today:

  • Submit an article/essay that deftly examines a contemporary work of African speculative/ science fiction.

  • Or an article that shines light on the terminology and language in contemporary African speculative/ science fiction or the classics.
  • Or an interview with a writer of African speculative/ science fiction.
  • The article should not exceed 5000 words.
  • It should be submitted as a word document to either of the two guest-editors: Chimalum Nwankwo (chimalumnwankwo@gmail.com), and Louisa Uchum Egbunike (louisa.egbunike@durham.ac.uk).
  • You can also submit literary supplements (poems, short stories, novel chapters, personal essays) or feature articles. These should be sent as a word document to the Series Editor: Ernest N. Emenyonu (eernest@umich.edu).

Modern Love has a central mission, which is to publish personal essays based on contemporary relationships. Although it has evolved into a podcast, a book, a TV show and Tiny Love Stories in its 16 years, this would always remain its primary focus.

They seek true stories on finding love, losing love and trying to keep love alive. They welcome essays that explore subjects such as adoption, technologyrace and friendship — anything that could reasonably fit under the heading “Modern Love.” Ideally, essays should spring from some central dilemma you have faced. It is helpful, but not essential, for the situation to reflect what is happening in the world now.

The best way to see the range of styles and subjects they publish is to read the column and listen to the podcast.

Love may be universal, but individual experiences can differ immensely and be informed by factors including race, socio-economic status, gender, disability status, nationality, sexuality, age, religion and culture. They especially encourage Black and Indigenous people and other people of color to submit, as well as writers outside of the United States and those who identify as members of L.G.B.T.Q communities.

Submission Guidelines For Modern Love.

  • Send submissions to: modernlove@nytimes.com.
  • Please put the subject of your essay or a possible title in the email subject line.
  • A maximum word count of 1,500-1,700 is all that is required.
  • Attach your essay as a Microsoft Word-compatible doc and paste the text into the body of the email. If your first submission is incomplete, please resubmit one complete entry; do not submit just the missing pieces in additional emails.
  • Essays must be entirely true. Do not use pseudonyms (including for yourself), composite characters or invented situations or scenes. There are no exceptions to this rule.
  • Essays must be previously unpublished. Work that has appeared online — on another news website, a personal blog, Medium or elsewhere — is considered previously published.
  • Essays will be edited in consultation with writers, and writers will be compensated for work that is published.
  • Modern Love intends to respond to every submission within three or four months, though response times may vary because of the high volume of submissions. There is no need to follow up.

To increase your chances of getting accepted, attend these free non-fiction courses by Roxanne Gay and Mary Karr.

PLEASE NOTE: Modern Love has two submission periods, September through December and March through June.

They do not accept submissions in July, August, January or February. Submissions made during those months will be deleted unread. Please submit again when the inbox reopens — which would be in March.

The reading period for this submission ends in December
