The 2025 Gate 27 Residency Program is now open for applications! In honor of the centennial of James Baldwin’s birthday, Gate 27 is proud to collaborate with La Maison Baldwin (LMB) to empower Black writers through a unique residency program. This collaboration will provide two Black writers with a one-month residency at Gate 27’s Istanbul premises, offering resources and support to foster their creative work. The residency offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Baldwin’s time in Istanbul, perhaps weaving in personal experiences or historical insights. 

Eligibility For The Gate 27 Residency Program.

They are seeking writers that are:

  • Black writers who are eager to follow the traces of James Baldwin in Istanbul
  • Have an interest in sustainability and willingness to integrate writing practice with Sustainable Development Goals #11, 12, 13, or 16.
  • Able to travel to Istanbul before July 2025 and is willing to produce a body of work to be included in the Gate 27 Collection
  • Working interdisciplinary, incorporating different mediums and disciplines into one’s practice. 
  • Artists, researchers, and professionals in visual arts, curation, literature, music, architecture, and design are welcome to apply. 

Requirements for The Gate 27 Residency Program

  • A short description of your research/project
  • A statement of your practice and interests through your past, present or on-going projects. 
Find out how to write personal statements for residencies. 
  • 2 References
  • A summary of your project and include its relevancy of UN Sustainable Development Goals’ Article 11, 12, 13, or 16. 
  • CV and Portfolio 
  • State the phase and components of your project that you will be working on. (Max. 150 words)

Eligibility for the Casa Uno Residency 

The Casa Uno Residency is seeking artists that are able to devote time to a project for 3 weeks in a beautiful nurturing environment in Costa Rica. Participants may be a writer, visual artist, photographer, filmmaker, storyteller, poet, composer, performer or dancer/choreographer. To make the best out of your stay upon acceptance, it’s important to work on your productivity rate as a writer

 

Requirements for the Casa Uno Residency 

  • They are more inclined to accept a writer with well-written responses to the questions on the application form. 

 

  • Artists should bring all supplies and materials needed for their creative project. 

 

  • Health insurance. 

 

  • Two professional references. Applicants are to provide the names and email addresses of two people who are familiar with their work and/or have worked with them on a basis related to their artistic work and work ethic. 

 

  • Resume and a well edited work sample of not more than five pages. 

 

 

  • A brief artist statement describing your work and why you make it, 250 words max. 

 

  • A detailed description of your proposed project for your Residency, a maximum of 500 words.

The Leon Levy Center for Biography 2024 offers four resident fellowships at the Graduate Center for the academic year beginning each September. 

Fellows devote their time to their projects and participate in monthly seminars. Furthermore, the public events of the Leon Levy Center for Biography, including the annual lecture and conference must be attended. Also, they are encouraged to join in the dynamic intellectual community of the Graduate Center.

Eligibility for The Leon Levy Center for Biography Fellowship 2024

  • Writers who have not yet published a biography or received fellowships for the writing of a biography
  • Also, publisge and accomplished writers who are undertaking their first biography are encouraged to submit
  • Applications are particularly welcome from CUNY faculty. More so, fellows may not teach or partake in other full-time employment during their academic year-in-residence. The Leon Levy Center for Biography does not award fellowships for;

The Marguerite and Lamar Smith Fellowship for Writers is now open!

The fellowship aims to afford writers uninterrupted time to focus on their work at an apartment in Carson McCuller’s childhood home in Columbus, Georgia, free from the distractions of daily life and other responsibilities.

The Marguerite and Lamar Smith Fellowship for Writers

The Marguerite and Lamar Fellowship for Writers is offered during fall semester. The fellowship begins the first of September and ends the first of December. During this time, the writing fellow will reside in a spacious private apartment inside Carson McCullers’s childhood home. The Smith-McCullers House.

The fellow is provided with a stipend of $5,000 to cover costs of transportation, food and other incidentals. Fellowship recipients are encouraged to take an active role in the community and to meet informally with students and local residents interested in writing.

How To Apply For The Marguerite and Lamar Fellowship for Writers

  • Compile the following information for submission: Send via email to: mccullerscenter@columbusstate.edu
  • A cover letter which explains why you would make a suitable fellow. Also, include the nature and extent of the work you intend to complete during the 3-month residency.
  • Send in your latest curriculum vitae, making sure to include fellowships, scholarships, prizes, or other honors you have received;
  • A writing sample of no more than 20 pages;
  • Also, they require at least two letters of recommendation.
  • All applications must be completed on or before April 1, 2024
  • All applications will be acknowledged, and finalists will be chosen and scheduled for telephone interviews with the selection committee by May 15.

Cove Park Residencies is a Scotland based residency looking to provide artists with the support they need to focus on their crafts. The agency is a UK based one, but they are open to both UK-based writers/creatives and international ones.

  • It is open to both UK-based writers and international creative artists.
  • The opportunity can only be awarded through the application process, nomination or direct invitation.
  • The opportunity is open to both individuals and collectives.

 

How To Apply Cove Park Residency Program 2023/2024.

  • Name and contact details are required. For collections, only one lead applicant should be named.
  • A statement of purpose is also required. This would be the perfect opportunity to talk about your current works and how this opportunity would be beneficial to you. Let them know the impact the program would have for you but make sure to say all these in 500 words or less.
  • They also require submissions of biographies. Members of collectives will be required to submit individual biographies.
  • Within the application form, they expect your CV and a list of documentations of work (That is images, videos, audio work, writings and any other form of proof of work).

What Does Cove Park Residency Program 2023/2024 Offer Creative Artists?

  • Cove Park Residencies offers travel allowances, but it varies depending on where applicants are located. For UK-based residents, they offer from £75 to £200, for EU-based residents, they offer £300 and artists from the rest of the world get £1000.
  • During the course of the program, they offer services and host events to aid artist peer-to-peer meet up. This is to help everyone interact and be as creative as possible.

The Ebedi International Writers Residency, Iseyin, has received three male Nigerian writers for her June batch residency program.

 

The three writers, Izunna Okafor, Isaiah Adepoju, and Hassan Muhammad, arrived the Residency, in Iseyin, Oyo State this June for a month-long residency stay, replacing the immediate-past fellows, who were all female.

Hosting the new writers to a reception party, alongside other stakeholders from the Iseyin community; the founder and patron of Ebedi International Writers Residency Hon. Dr. Wale Okediran explained that the Residency affords writers comfortable and calm environment to focus on their writing without distraction and also at no cost on the writers.

Okediran, a former House of Reps member and current Secretary-General of Pan-African Writers Association (PAWA), said while concentrating on their individual works the writers are expected to also interact with selected students of some secondary schools in Iseyin town for about four hours weekly, during which they can teach the students any form of creative arts or writing, as they so desire.

He also revealed that since its inception 12 years ago, the Ebedi Writers Residency has hosted over three hundred writers from different countries of the world.

Below are short biographies of the three new writers for the May 30 — June 30 2022 residency program:

Izunna Okafor

Izunna Okafor

Izunna Okafor is a Nigerian novelist, poet, journalist, essayist, and Igbo language activist who hails from Ebenator in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State. He writes perfectly in Igbo and English languages, and has published widely in both languages, including some books — Ikem’s Adventure, The Curse of a Widow, The Faithful Children, Ajọ Enyi, among others.

A Public Adminstration graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Okafor’s works have appeared in some print magazines, anthologies, journals, etc, both nationally and internationally; while he also has thousands of online published articles/essays, poems and short stories to his credit. He has also edited and co-edited over 25 books and anthologies (published nationally and internationally), as well as served as judge in some national and international literary contests.

Okafor has won and been nominated for some national and international awards which include: Nigerian Writers Award/Indigenous Writer of the Year 2015/2016; Pita Nwana Prize for Igbo Literature, 2015; Nigeria Heritage Icon Award/Young Writer of the Year, Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2016; Nigerian Writers Award/Young Writer of the Year 2015/2016; N.Y.S.C. Essay Competition, 2012; SLAM Hero Youth International Award/Innovative Youth of the Year 2016; First Prize Winner, NAPAS Essay Competition, 2016; The Future Award Africa, 2016; Anambra Exclusive Youth Choice Award/Youth Writer of the Year 2016; Award of Academic Excellence from National Association of Public Administration Students, 2016; Inspire Award/Outstanding Youth in Academics, 2017.

He is a Fellow of the SprinNG Literary Movement/SprinNG Advancement Fellowship, 2020, and alumnus of some creative writing workshops, including the Naija Haiku Poetry Workshop, 2020, among others

In April, 2020, Okafor was appointed the Project Coordinator, Writers Against COVID-19 Movement. He also headed the editorial team of the first international anthology of poems and essays ever published on COVID-19 — Ripostes of Locked Down Voices. He also edited ‘The Malady and the Remedy’, an international essay anthology on human rights abuse in Africa.

A literary organizer, Okafor is the Coordinator of Society of Young Nigeria Writers (Anambra State Chapter), National Secretary of Society of Young Nigeria Writers, as well as the organizer of the Chinua Achebe Literary Festival (an annual international literary festival held in honour of Nigerian literary icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Chinua Achebe Poetry/Essay Anthology.

Okafor said during his stay at the Ebedi Residency, he would be working on an Igbo novel and three others books, and would also be teaching the Ebedi students Igbo language, creative writing, poetry and others.

 

Isaiah Adepoju

Isaiah Adepoju

 

Isaiah Adepoju, who hails from Osun State, studies Literature in English at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He writes for Literature Voices Journal, Nigeria; reads for Adroit Journal, UK, and reads for the James Currey Prize for Literature, UK.

He has works in Aster Lit mag, Sterling Notes, Poetica Review, Institute of African Studies Journal Nsukka, and elsewhere. He’s the recipient of the 2022 HIASFEST Star Prize, the 2021 Chima Ugokwe Prize for Essay, the 2021 Pengician Chapbook Prize for Poetry; and longlisted for the 2020 Africa Writers Award.

Isaiah said he’ll be working on a fiction, and teaching the students poetry during his 4-week stay.

 

Hassan Muhammad

Hassan Muhammad

Hassan Muhammad is a children’s author, short story writer, and poet. He has a degree in Estate Management from the Federal University of Technology, Minna where he co-founded the Arts Club. He was a two-term Secretary and Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Niger State chapter. An active member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), he’s the recipient of multiple scholarships including Highlights Foundation, Authors Publish, SCBWI and GrubStreet. His children’s books are Biribiri Saves Us (2008) and The Empty Cage (2015) which was shortlisted for the ANA/Lantern Prize.

His works have appeared in ANA Review, Kalahari Review, Authors Publish Magazine, The Writers and Readers’ Magazine, Weekly Trust Newspaper, New Nigerian Newspaper, and the anthologies: Pyramids, Fireflies, Shadows and Dance Steps at Dawn. Other credits include NYSC Merit Award, Northern Nigeria Writers’ Summit Merit Award, Corpers’ Welfare Association Billiri Merit Award, and shortlist for the ANA/Funtime Prize.

He is an alumnus of British Council’s Writing Workshop, ANA/Atiku Abubakar National Workshop on Children’s Literature, The Writing Barn’s Poetry Class, among others. He enjoys reading picture books, chess, comedy, and combat sports for inspiration and leisure. He writes as NmaHassan Muhammad and resides in Minna.

He will be completing the revision of three children’s manuscripts which were workshopped recently during the GrubStreet’s Picture Book Revision course with Holly Thompson. He dedicates these stories and the residency to the memory of his son Abdullateef Hamood who died in a tragic fire accident on November 3, 2021.

To give back to the host community, he will be facilitating workshops on the craft and business of writing children’s books for the students in Iseyin community. In addition, he would love to form a chess club for the students in the community.

The Steinbeck Fellowship named in honor of author John Steinbeck offers one-year fellowships in Steinbeck scholarship and in creative writing, including fiction, drama, creative nonfiction, and biography.

The Steinbeck Fellowship is held at San José State University. Up to six Fellows are chosen every year. Selected Fellows are expected to give one public reading from their work and must reside in the Bay Area during the academic year.
